This research investigates the application of design methods and practices, in particular basic design, to a context of interaction design where auditory feedback is of central importance. In particular, the attention is focused on everyday objects provided with manipulative and computational capabilities, wherein an adequate, expressive and functional acoustic behaviour may enhance the overall experience of use. In computer-based systems, form does not necessarily follow the functionality, therefore enabling interpretive processes at the various experiential levels (perceptual, aesthetic, semantic, emotional) through design is crucial for making sense of the artefact. Although the factors influencing the experience of meaning are many, ranging from context, cultural values, skills, etc., this investigation concentrates on the perceptual level of the sonic interactive experience, wherein the perceptual motor skills of users are emphasized in order to aim for richness in sensorial experiences and action possibilities. The manipulative approach of basic design proves to be a valuable method for training auditory perception in interaction, develop appropriate compositional skills, while at the same time observing and investigating perceptual phenomena.
